EMDR HAP is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization committed to relieving human suffering and breaking the cycle of violence by providing training to mental health professionals serving traumatized communities worldwide.
Our organizational objectives are to:
Give local mental health professionals the tools to meet the long-term emotional needs of traumatic stress survivors in their own communities by training them in EMDR methodology
Promote further research in using EMDR for humanitarian purposes
Since Oklahoma City, a growing network of EMDR HAP volunteers have responded to the calls for healing that come from all over the world, be it earthquakes in Turkey, the tsunami in south Asia or Hurricane Katrina on the Gulf coast.
We have reached out to communities traumatized by war and terror in Palestine and Israel, Croatia and Bosnia, Northern Ireland, and Kenya. We have filled the void in mental health services for inner-city communities from Brooklyn to San Francisco and underserved populations in Budapest, Hungary, Poland, Ukraine, Mexico, Nicaragua, El Salvador and beyond.
We have treated and trained and sowed the seeds for healing in the aftermaths of the TWA Flight 800 crash, the school shootings at Columbine High and Dunblane, Scotland, and the 9/11 terrorist attacks on New York and Washington.
Where there is a need, our mission is to fill it.
Our emphasis is on breaking the cycle of suffering, which we accomplish with a strategy that relies on our extensive network of mental health professionals to train local clinicians to continue the cycle of healing in their own communities.
This training-focused model has several advantages. By teaching EMDR to local therapists, we are equipping them with an efficient and effective tool with which to treat trauma. The professionals who are already part of the affected community are not being replaced by outsiders; rather, they are being given an important resource to be used when and how they think is best.
Because trauma reactions are sometimes delayed, and because individuals often try to resolve problems on their own before they seek professional intervention, training local clinicians helps ensure that when people do come for help, their needs can be met. In this way, effective treatment of trauma extends far beyond the parameters of a single event.
Our goals are to expand the reach of EMDR HAP and prevent the continuation of suffering and violence.
Toward those ends, our most urgent funding needs are for:
- Expanding training missions to serve more communities in need, both in developing countries and in underserved communities of developed nations.
- Coordinating clinicians to provide pro bono treatment to victims and emergency service workers during any future crisis, as we did after the Oklahoma City bombing and the 9/11 terrorist attacks.
- Continuing research on trauma risk and recovery factors and treatment outcomes.
- Enhancing our infrastructure to ensure our continued capacity to respond to future crises.
