A national, permanent and expandable network of clinician volunteers will soon emerge as a major HAP initiative, open to experienced EMDR clinicians in any community. Sparked by the nationwide distribution of Gulf Coast evacuees, the network is based on the premise that prior planning and organization will greatly increase the value of clinical services during a local, regional, or national disaster emergency. The network will also ensure that the specific benefits of EMDR will be available when and where they are needed.
Hurricane Katrina sent Gulf Coast evacuees to more than 800 communities, in every state of the Union. Three hundred EMDR clinicians then offered to provide pro bono assistance through HAP. It had happened before, on a slightly smaller scale, after 9/11, when local HAP networks were organized to support this work in New York and Washington. Building a permanent network now will mean that in a future disaster, network clinicians will be "in place", knowing what to do and when to do it, especially in the recovery phase of the disaster, when natural resiliency has served most of the people it can serve and those remaining with stress symptoms need something stronger than debriefing or extended talk therapy.
Interested clinicians can apply to join the Trauma Recovery Network on this site by registering as a volunteer and choosing a TRN role (clinician, coordinator, or consultant) as one of their interests.
