What’s HAPpening, Behind the Scenes with Trauma Recovery HAP

A podcast about the past, present, and future of Trauma Recovery, EMDR Humanitarian Assistance Programs – fondly known as HAP. Our Host and HAP Executive Director, Carol Martin, will bring listeners behind the scenes and into our amazing community at HAP, to share our history of bringing trauma healing to those in need throughout the world, and to tell the stories of real impact our organization makes every day.

Episode 7: Training in EMDR Therapy with Frontier Behavioral Health

In this episode of What’s HAPpening, we are joined by Sonya Williams, MSW, LICSW, CMHS from Frontier Behavioral Health, a nonprofit organization in Spokane, WA that provides clinically and culturally appropriate behavioral healthcare and related services to individuals of all ages in collaboration with community partners. Trauma Recovery/HAP has a long history of partnering with Frontier Behavioral Health and providing EMDR Basic training to their staff, so they in turn can use EMDR therapy to help their focus population.

Sonya talks with us about the impact and importance of having EMDR therapy trained clinicians at the agency. She also shares her personal motivation for participating in HAP’s trainings and why she believes all clinicians would benefit from having EMDR therapy in their toolbox.

Episode 6: The Greater Chicago Trauma Recovery Network

In this episode of What’s HAPpening, we are joined by Sharon Steckler, LCSW, a certified EMDR therapist and consultant, with over 20 years’ experience as a psychotherapist. Sharon serves as the Coordinator of our Greater Chicago Trauma Recovery Network.

Sharon tells us about the history and mission of the Greater Chicago TRN, as well as the incredible work TRN members are doing to serve the greater Chicago area. She speaks about their most recent response to the July 2022 Highland Park parade shooting and their efforts to bring healing to members of the community.

Episode 5: Conversations with Carol Forgash, LCSW

In this episode of What’s HAPpening, we are joined by Carol Forgash, LCSW, an internationally known lecturer and consultant on EMDR therapy and someone who has made and continues to make invaluable contributions to the EMDR community and to this organization. Carol shares some of her most memorable and impactful experiences she’s had while volunteering with HAP, as well as advice for those just starting our in the field of EMDR therapy.

Episode 4: Making an Impact as a HAP Volunteer with Peggy Moore

In this episode of What’s HAPpening, we are joined by Peggy Moore a dedicated member of the HAP Faculty since this organization was formed back in 1995. Peggy talks about her experience as a HAP facilitator and trainer and about participating in the very first HAP disaster response to the Oklahoma City bombing in 1995. She describes her volunteer work with the Albuquerque Area Trauma Recovery Network and several international HAP projects that have impacted her over the years.

Peggy is a Licensed Independent Social Worker in private practice in Albuquerque, New Mexico, an EMDR Certified Therapist, an EMDRIA Approved Consultant and an EMDR Institute trainer.

Episode 3: Volunteering From the Heart with Janet Wright, MSW, LCSW

In this episode of What’s HAPpening, we are joined by Janet Wright, MSW, LCSW, who has volunteered in many roles over the years with HAP. Janet has served as a HAP facilitator and trainer and has participated in several international training projects, most notably working with a team of HAP colleagues to develop the very first Arabic speaking EMDR training team in the Middle East.

In this interview, Janet shares her experiences and insights gathered from over 35 years of working with children, adolescents and adults who have experienced abuse, trauma and loss, as well as her motivation to serve as a volunteer.

Episode 2: 15 Years of Service with Bill Stadtlander, President of Trauma Recovery/HAP Board of Directors

In this episode of What’s HAPpening, we are joined by Bill Stadtlander, President of the Trauma Recovery/HAP Board of Directors.Bill first got involved with this organization in 2007. He is the former CEO of Homestat Farm, a manufacturer of food products, and prior to that was a corporate officer with Abbott Laboratories.

As of 2022, Bill has served as a HAP volunteer for 15 years! In this interview, he shares with us his very personal connection to EMDR therapy, how he’s witnessed HAP change and grow over the years, and much more. 

Episode 1: History of HAP with Robbie Dunton, Executive Director of the EMDR Institute

In this episode of What’s HAPpening, we are joined by Robbie Dunton, Executive Director of the EMDR Institute and longtime member of the HAP Board of Directors. Robbie’s involved with our organization goes back to our founding days. In this interview, Robbie talks about the original vision for HAP, many of the early disaster interventions and the dedicated volunteers who helped, as well as her relationship with and fond memories of Dr. Francine Shapiro.
