EMDR therapy training is a two-part course. Part 1 of the training consists of a 20-hour course of study, employing the Part 1 Training Manual authored by Francine Shapiro and published by the EMDR Institute.
The course of study is presented over a three full day period, beginning with a lecture on the first day, covering an overview of the training, an introduction to the EMDR therapeutic approach, the Adaptive Information Processing Model, and preliminary practice skills. Break times are provided between lectures and for lunch on all 3 days.
All three days are devoted to lectures in the morning and practica in the afternoons. Each practicum session is conducted by a facilitator working with small groups of participants. The lectures and practica enable the participant to learn and practice the skills associated with the eight phases of EMDR therapy. These include Client History, Client Preparation, Assessment (structured accessing and measures of target memory), Desensitization (reprocessing the target memory network), Installation, Body Scan, Closure, and Reevaluation.
Upon completion of the Part 1 training, participants are prepared to begin EMDR practice with clients under the guidance of an approved consultant on the Trauma Recovery/HAP consultant directory.
