Together, We Can Heal Trauma

Help Trauma Recovery, EMDR Humanitarian Assistance Programs (Trauma Recovery/HAP) provide life-changing mental health support in the wake of natural and manmade disasters. Let’s bring hope and healing to the world.

Disaster Responses

Trauma is the most widespread and socially costly mental health issue worldwide. It’s often caused by frightening or violent events that result in physical, emotional and/or psychological pain. Our mission is to provide transformative Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) therapy to reduce the amount of PTSD and other mental health conditions in devastated communities.

Trauma Recovery Network®

Staffed entirely by trained volunteers, our global Trauma Recovery Network® (TRN®) consists of local/regional member groups that can quickly mobilize after a disaster and provide pro bono EMDR services to those in need. These networks engage local emergency management systems and the general public to restore and safeguard psychological well-being.

We’re incredibly proud of our far-reaching impact over the years, but the success of these efforts relies heavily on the continued support of our generous donors.

  • 100

In the aftermath of the Oklahoma City bombing in 1995, approximately 100 volunteer clinicians provided EMDR treatment to victims and first responders.

  • 1995

Due to the overwhelmingly positive impact of these treatments, Dr. Francine Shapiro and others founded the non-profit organization Trauma Recovery/HAP.

  • 92.7%

In 1999, trained clinicians in Turkey treated earthquake victims and demonstrated that 92.7% of those with PTSD lost the diagnosis after an average of five EMDR sessions.

  • 16,000

100 clinicians in India trained by Trauma Recovery/HAP were able to provide treatment to over 16,000 survivors of the Gujarat earthquake in 2001.

  • 9/11

The need for quick and effective mobilization of mental health services post-9/11 prompted the creation of our first Trauma Recovery Network®.

  • 30+

Trauma Recovery/HAP has continued to expand its outreach and has coordinated responses to natural or manmade disasters in over 30 countries.

  • 1,400+

Now, over 1,400 volunteer EMDR therapists across 68 worldwide Trauma Recovery Networks® are able to effectively respond to trauma in their local communities.

As a helping profession, we must take help to where it is most needed…The clinicians are those who directly help to alleviate the world’s suffering. The alleviation of that suffering is the duty of our profession.

    Trauma Recovery/HAP Founder

    Steven Silver, PhD

EMDR is one of the most powerful tools I’ve encountered for treating post-traumatic stress. In the hands of a competent and compassionate therapist, it gives people the means to heal themselves.

EMDR therapy helps you process things…and then put those thoughts back away, not to forget them but to keep them somewhere where they can no longer hurt you.

    Robert Stickgold, PhD

We believe that EMDR…allows the person undergoing treatment to more effectively process and incorporate traumatic memories into general association networks in the brain.

When I discovered HAP and the mission they serve I felt like I found my professional family. The impact we made serving the community after the Parkland MSD Shooting in 2018 made me more passionate about spreading EMDR teaching in the therapeutic community. I saw firsthand the huge impact EMDR had on long term healing.

To have these clinicians worldwide, to understand that they are bonded together by a desire to alleviate suffering…and to have organizations know that if one country is in need, other countries are going to come to their aid to be able to bring the world together in that way. That’s the hope. To be able to allow EMDR worldwide where it’s needed, and perhaps to make some inroads in bringing peace together.

So if you can imagine that we have therapists all over the world helping people heal through trauma and adverse events, that their interactions improve with everybody around them. And now the good is spreading and that’s that ripple effect, right? It only takes one of us to make a difference.

    Executive Director, Trauma Recovery/HAP

    Lauren Stinson

My individual TRN client has completed trauma therapy around the school incident after five individual sessions, reporting no more flashbacks or nightmares. I’m very excited for their progress and am reminded why working with teenagers is so rewarding.
