EMDR THERAPY BASIC TRAINING SERIES

Elevate Your Expertise

Eye Movement Desensitization & Reprocessing (EMDR) therapy requires specialized, supervised training to ensure safe and effective practice. Trauma Recovery, EMDR Humanitarian Assistance Programs (Trauma Recovery/HAP) is proud to offer the only trainings by a non-profit based entirely on the EMDR manual and research of Dr. Francine Shapiro, the developer of EMDR therapy. Become one of the 40,000+ participants to take our low-cost, high-quality, EMDRIA-approved training programs specifically designed for clinicians in public, non-profit, and underserved settings.

EMDR Therapy Basic Training Series

Trauma Recovery/HAP’s EMDR Therapy Basic Training Series consists of Part 1 (3-day training), Part 2 (3-day training), and 10 hours with one of our consultants.

You should allow at least 8 weeks between your Part 1 and your Part 2 trainings. This allows you to work on the skills you learned in Part 1 and obtain consultation hours to better prepare you for the Part 2 training.

We offer flexible learning options, including live virtual and in-person trainings nationwide.

As a requirement of your EMDR Therapy Basic Training, you are required to complete 10 hours of consultation. All consultation must meet the EMDR International Association (EMDRIA) requirements for EMDR Therapy Basic Training and should be provided in developmental increments over the course of the training to allow optimal learning and opportunity for feedback.

You need to use a Trauma Recovery/HAP Consultant for these case consultation hours. Trauma Recovery/HAP Consultants are all EMDRIA Approved Consultants who have gone through additional training with Trauma Recovery/HAP in our training model and protocols and have on-going training with the most recent training materials. The training staff at the trainings you attend are all Trauma Recovery/HAP Consultants and can help you get into a consultation group. Hours completed with consultants not on the Trauma Recovery/HAP Consultant Directory will not be accepted.

You can access the Trauma Recovery/HAP Consultant Directory here.

Training fees do not include case consultation. Consultation fees are generally $25-$50 per hour, for group consultation, paid directly to your consultant. Each participant needs to arrange for the consultations on his/her own.

Ten (10) hours of case consultation are required beyond practice sessions during training. The recommended schedule to be completed is as follows:

    • Five (5) hours case consultation completed after Part 1 training, but before Part 2
    • Five (5) hours case consultation completed after Part 2 training

The more you apply what you learn in Part 1 in your clinical practice prior to Part 2, the more you gain from the information to address more complex presentations in Part 2. Consultation is designed to help you with this essential initial practice.

All Trauma Recovery/HAP trainees have ID numbers. You can find your trainee ID number on your registration confirmation email once you register for a training. Trainees will need to provide this number to your consultant during consultation. If you are unable to find your Trainee ID Number please click here to retrieve your Trainee ID number.

This procedural description serves as a guideline for handling such grievances.

    1. When a participant, either orally or in written format, files a grievance or expects action on the complaint, the following actions will be taken. If the grievance concerns a speaker, the content presented by the speaker, or the style of presentation, the individual filing the grievance will be asked to express their comments in written format. The Education Chair/Continuing Education Director will then pass on the comment to the speaker, assuring the confidentiality of the aggrieved individual.
    2. If the grievance concerns a workshop offering, its content, level of presentation, or the facilities in which the workshop was offered, the Convention/Conference Chairperson will mediate and will be the final arbitrator. If the participant requests action, the Convention/Conference Chairperson will:

2a) attempt to move the participant to another workshop.

    2b) provide a credit for a future workshop or on-demand course equally valued;

2c) or provide a partial or full refund of the workshop fee.

**Actions 2b and 2c require written notes documenting the grievance for record keeping purposes. Either note need not be signed by the aggrieved individual.

    1. If the grievance concerns the Trauma Recovery/HAP CE program in a specific regard, the Education Chair/Continuing Education Director will attempt to arbitrate and will engage the Clinical Consultant team and when necessary, the Executive Director. When the grievance is filed by a social worker, the Social Worker Consultant will be involved in the investigation and resolution of all grievance. If further escalation is necessary, the grievance will be sent directly to the Board President.

    The Shapiro Effect

Our non-profit organization was founded by Dr. Francine Shapiro in 1995 as a response to the Oklahoma City bombing. Her revolutionary work created a momentous ripple effect that is still felt today. We’ve played a pivotal role in bringing EMDR to the world — training thousands of clinicians, building regional Trauma Recovery Networks® and delivering humanitarian mental health services — ensuring that trauma recovery is widely accessible, especially in the most underserved and crisis-affected communities.

    What Is EMDR Therapy?

Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) is a structured, evidence-based psychotherapy method designed to help people recover from trauma and other distressing life experiences. Developed by Dr. Francine Shapiro in the late 1980s, EMDR is based on the idea that many psychological symptoms are rooted in unprocessed memories that have overwhelmed the brain’s natural resilience or coping capacity. Through EMDR therapy, patients can reprocess traumatic information until it is no longer psychologically disruptive.

    How Does EMDR Therapy Work?

EMDR uses a model known as Adaptive Information Processing (AIP), in which the brain is equipped to manage and process adversity. Trauma can disrupt this system. Unlike traditional talk therapies, EMDR doesn’t require detailed verbal descriptions of trauma. Instead, EMDR uses bilateral stimulation — such as side-to-side eye movements, alternating tapping and auditory tones — while a patient focuses on a disturbing memory. This bilateral stimulation helps the brain reprocess it, reducing its emotional charge and vividness and linking it to more adaptive information.

    What Does EMDR Treat?

EMDR is best known for treating post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), but research shows it is effective for many conditions, including anxiety and panic disorders, depression, obsessive-compulsive disorder, phobias, chronic pain, addictions and more.

It is recognized worldwide as an effective treatment by many organizations, including the World Health Organization (WHO), the American Psychological Association (APA), and the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs.

What Are the Eight Phases of EMDR Therapy?

EMDR is a structured, eight-phase treatment approach that guides clients from assessment through healing and integration. These phases work together to transform negative beliefs, reduce distress and restore adaptive functioning.

    1. History-taking & treatment planning
    2. Preparation (education and coping skills)
    3. Assessment (target memory identification)
    4. Desensitization (processing with bilateral stimulation)
    5. Installation (strengthening positive beliefs)
    6. Body scan (resolving residual somatic distress)
    7. Closure (stabilization at end of session)
    8. Reevaluation (reviewing progress over time)
